A proposal for the mechanics of the upgrading of equipment.

All Weapons and Armour in the game are signature equipment of the character and cannot be changed and hence is upgraded to have various properties and upgrades throughout the game. Each Weapon and Armour has an amount of upgrade slots.

To Upgrade Equipment

To upgrade equipment, you'd need the services of a certain NPC, a blacksmith for example. And you'd need the items required for the upgrade.

Items in the game should be divided into various properties. For example:-
Fire Level 1
Fire Level 2
Alloy Level 1
Resillience

The upgrade of equipment doesn't depend on the actual item itself but the property of the item.

For example, to upgrade an armour to have Fire Resistance 15% you need to have-
3 Fire Level 1 items.
Lets say the Fire Level 1 items you currently have are-
Blaze Shard
Fire Gem
Heat Ruby

You can either use 3 Blaze Shards, 2 Fire Gems and a Heat Ruby, 3 Fire Gems.... any combination. As long as you have 3.

Upgrade Slots

Lets say a character has a signature Mithril Plate which has 10 upgrade slots.

You want the following upgrades to it, Fire Resistance 15% and Defense Up Level 1.
Lets say Fire Resistance 15% gives 15% damage resistance to fire property attacks and Defense Up Level 1 raises your defense by 2.

Lets say Fire Resistance 15% takes up 3 slots and Defense Up Level 1 takes up one slot. Lets just say you have the required items to upgrade your armour.

You can upgrade Fire Resistance 15% 3 times and Defense Up Level 1 once to give your armour a Fire Resistance of 45% and a defense upgrade of 2 or upgrade your armour 10 times with Defense Up Level 1 to have a defense upgrade of 20. Or any combination.

Upgrade Undoing

Theres an option to remove upgrades from your equipment to free up slots. Lets say as you move on with the game, stronger better upgrades are available at the cost of more items needed to upgrade.

Lets say you went to a new town which has a blacksmith offering Defense Up Level 2.

Defense Up Level 1 requires 3 Alloy Level 1 items and takes up one slot and offers a defense boost of 2.
Defense Up Level 2 required 2 Alloy Level 1 items and 2 Alloy Level 2 items and takes up one slot and offers a defense boost of 3.

Although Defense Up Level 2 is more expensive, it gives more defense for the same amount of slots it takes up.

Like a Mithril Plate with 10 upgrade slots can be upgraded with-
10 Defense Up Level 1 to give 20 bonus defense or
10 Defense Up Level 2 to give 30 bonus defense.

Better upgrades would be better in the sense its more 'slot efficient'. You're better off using better upgrades than accumulated low level upgrades. Since better upgrades are only available later, you can upgrade your equipment with weaker upgrades to start with and slowly advance.

When you unupgrade
You remove the upgrade and get back a fraction of the items used.
Like if you used 3 Alloy Level 1 items for Defense Up Level 1, you get back 1 Alloy Level 1 item when you remove it.

Improving existing upgrades

Instead of completely removing an existing upgrade, you can improve the upgrade.

Lets say you want to boost a Defense Up Level 1 to Defense Up Level 2.

Defense Up Level 2 normally requires 2 Alloy Level 1 items and 2 Alloy Level 2 items.

Since you are improving a Defense Up Level 1 to Defense Up Level 2, the cost is decreased and now you only need
2 Alloy Level 2 items.

Improving existing upgrades would be more economical in a sense only improving existing upgrades would decrease the versatility of your upgrades. You might want to remove upgrades for different new upgrades to give you more of an advantage.
